Floramel and Esteban

by Emilie Buchwald

Floramel is the only cow—indeed the only animal—in the meadow, and even the sight of the blue-green Caribbean does not console her. Floramel is also curious. She yearns to know more about the world around her—in the air, on the ground, under the sea—but how can a cow learn about life outside the meadow?

One day a flock of cattle egrets lands in the meadow, and Floramel listens eagerly to their leader explain the relief such a bird can bring to a cow tormented by the bites and stings of insects. When lazy Esteban stays behind with Floramel, a friendship between the two begins and gives Floramel new eyes with which to see the world and a way to make music.

First published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1982, this reissue introduces a new generation of readers to an enchanting tale of friendship.

Quotes:

"Emilie Buchwald has created the most memorable interspecies friendship since Wilbur met Charlotte."

—Juanita Havill, author of Grow

"Read Emilie Buchwald's tale and be reminded to watch and listen for the flickering flames of creativity inside and around us."

—Debra Frasier, author/illustrator of On the Day You Were Born

"Floramel and Esteban is the kind of book readers don't often see anymore—a generous and spirited story of animals, love, island culture, friendship, and pure joy. It's the kind of book I loved as a child and can't wait to read to someone young very soon."

—Susan Straight, author of A Million Nightingales
