Winter Creek

One Writer's Natural History

by John Daniel

Winter Creek is John Daniel's disarmingly honest story of his restless youth, looking for meaning in drugs and an active outdoor life in the West. From time spent fishing, climbing, and making a living logging--as well as through friendships with writers William Stafford and Wallace Stegner--Daniel developed a personal and artistic ethos based on a long view of evolution and the glory of living with one's senses and an open mind. Daniel also speaks for the need to value small farmers and ranchers--"authentic human communities" that are as threatened as the plants and animals environmentalists strive to protect.

John Daniel

Author's Bio:

Born in South Carolina and raised in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., John Daniel has lived in the West since 1966. Daniel contributes essays and articles to magazines and literary journals such as Audubon, Outside, Hope, Southwest Review, Western American Literature, and Open Spaces. His prose has appeared in many anthologies, including The Sacred Earth: Writers on Nature and Spirit, Facing the Lion: Writers on Life & Craft, the American Nature Writing volumes for 1995 and 1998, and The Norton Book of Nature Writing. Daniel's newest book, Rogue River Journal: A Winter Alone, was published by Shoemaker & Hoard in May 2005.

Quotes:

"John Daniel's voice is perfectly modulated, his judgments restrained, his sense of self dead level. This approach, together with Daniel's lyrical sensibility, makes this contour map of one writer's evolution wonderfully engaging."—Barry Lopez
