Widely regarded as one of the most progressive and educated states in the nation, the land of ten thousand lakes has a rich literary tradition. From Sinclair Lewis and F. Scott Fitzgerald to contemporary writers like Louise Erdrich, Kate DiCamillo, Garrison Keillor, Charles Baxter, Patricia Hampl, and many more, Minnesota occupies a central place in the history and current state of American literature.
    In 2008, Minnesota celebrates the sesquicentennial of its founding. Along with the rest of the country, Minnesota has changed enormously over this century and a half.  Most recently, the state’s population has grown particularly quickly in the burgeoning suburbs that ring the cities. Family farms have given way to industrialized agribusiness. And several wave of immigration have left the state far more diverse than the nation’s image of it would suggest.
Selected in part to reflect the rapidly changing and increasingly diverse nature of the state’s population, this anthology of short fiction presents a literary portrait of Minnesota at the outset of the twenty-first century. Including fiction by and about an extraordinarily wide and diverse range of voices and characters, Fiction on a Stick is an essential volume for those who love the North Star State, and for those who love great literature.
