The Linden Tree
by Ellie Mathews
Katy Sue is the youngest member of the Hanson family. Their small Iowa
farm is home to pigs, chickens, and geese, and a lush garden that keeps
them busy. But life becomes much harder in the spring of 1948, when
their mother suddenly contracts meningitis and dies.
Her grave, under the linden tree on a nearby hill, is a place Katy Sue
and the rest of the family visit at special moments in the following
months. Each of the children responds differently to the loss of their
mother, while Mr. Hanson nurses his own broken heart. Despite their
efforts to keep their family life in order, her absence has left a huge
hole in their lives. The house’s haunted emptiness is only filled when
Aunt Katherine, their mother’s beloved sister, comes to the family’s
aid, and when Jake, an ornithologist and long-time family friend, drops
by for a visit. In the spirit of Sarah, Plain and Tall comes this heartfelt story of a bygone era.
