Willow Room, Green Door

New and Selected Poems

by Deborah Keenan

Written over the course of three decades, this extraordinary collection of new and selected poems presents a body of work from Deborah Keenan that is expressive variously of love and rage, vulnerability and authority, distraction and focus, and perhaps above all, a sharply empathetic sense of observation. Deborah Keenan’s work balances holding on to what is dear with letting go of what she cannot change.

With refreshing curiosity, these poems capture rich layers of life in trial and bliss alike, enabling us at last to see what a number of her contemporaries have recognized for some time: Deborah Keenan is one of our great poets.

"For the rest, she needed to recede. She felt herself
As a vanishing point. In the beginning of the summer
She’d been content in the middle distance–had faith
In love and art and the beauty of the night.
Now–diminished by the battle of the Gold Star Mothers,
By the dusty Texas road and the hatred saturating
The air–she was appropriately small. If only
She could shrink like this for the daughter’s sake,
Protect the daughter, VALUE the daughter, but
Be very, very small . . . not maiden, not princess."

—from “The Children’s Moon in the Poem about Summer”

Quotes:

“Reading these poems it often seemed as if each individual line was a poem in itself and contained, in miniature, the whole. . . . In the end, what Willow Room, Green Door offers more than anything else is sheer pleasure: this is lyric poetry that sings, enchants, debunks and then reconstructs the truths and mysteries of our lives.” –Jim Moore, author of Lightning at Dinner
