The South Atlantic Coast and Piedmont
A Literary Field Guide
by Sara St. Antoine, editor
Illustrations by Trudy Nicholson
The latest in the Stories from Where We Live series of literary field guides for kids and families who love both literature and the outdoors.
The South has always celebrated its heritage. This book for kids and
families focuses on the region’s natural heritage, from Maryland to
Florida, and from the coast to the foothills of the Appalachians. The
book’s stories, poems, essays, and historical accounts were
specifically chosen because they feature the region’s habitats (from
hilly farms to bottomland forests, from churning rivers to marshes to
barrier islands), plants, animals, and weather.
A young girl grows up in Virginia's tidewater and learns to fish
in the Chesapeake Bay. A boy watches great horned owls outside his
aunt’s Atlanta home. A girl escapes the crowds of Ocean City and sees
the brilliant orange beak of an American oystercatcher. Two brothers in
Florida catch an enormous bass. A family canoes through the Okefenokee
Swamp, the night alive with frogs and gators. The book captures the
balmy, beautiful nights of a southern summer and the joy of kids on
rubber rafts riding the ocean’s waves. It tells of kite flying in a
South Carolina spring, of autumn along the C&O Canal, of fossil
hunting along Virginia's rivers, oyster roasts on Maryland’s eastern
shore, and berry picking in North Carolina.
