The Gulf Coast
A Literary Field Guide
by Sara St. Antoine, editor
Illustrations by Trudy Nicholson
Journey from beaches to bayous to bottomland forests in The Gulf Coast,
the fourth in the Stories from Where We Live series of literary
anthologies for young people. The Gulf Coast region comprises the
waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the lands that surround it, including
eastern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, and western and
southernmost Florida. Characterized by a warm, moist climate and
dominated by coastal and freshwater wetlands, it is home to
rattlesnakes, crayfish, roseate spoonbills, manatees, and many other
life forms.
The selections in the anthology introduce readers to some of these
natural wonders and to the people of the past and present who have
lived in their midst. Readers will encounter the whooping cranes that
winter in western Texas and the alligators and panthers of the Florida
Everglades. They will meet Choctaw Indians, fur traders, shrimpers,
cotton farmers, and city kids. The anthology features the work of a
number of celebrated authors with close ties to the region, including
Zora Neale Hurston, E. O. Wilson, Pattiann Rogers, John James Audubon,
and Marjory Stoneman Douglas. All the selections bear the imprint of
the region's strong storytelling tradition and its remarkable richness
of life.
