A Bride for Anna’s Papa
A Story of Finnish Immigrants
by Isabel R. Marvin
The
death of her mother has left thirteen-year-old Anna Kallio responsible
for running the house, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of
her nine-year-old brother, Matti. She has no time anymore for
school or friends. She and Matti worry about their father, a
blacksmith for the iron mines, and decide to find him a new
wife. When they try to arrange a match with one of the “mail
order” brides arriving from Finland, the results are different
from anything Anna expected. The book’s conclusion features
the Chisholm Fire of 1908.
