Tides
by V.M. Caldwell
Summer's only begun and it looks like it might be awful. It's
Elizabeth Sheridan's second year with her adoptive family and she's
been looking forward all winter to being back at Grandma's house with
her cousins and taking her first plunge in the ocean. But, nothing's
turning out as planned.
Adam, Elizabeth's eldest cousin, is in a funk. He starts breaking the
Sheridan rules right away and then moves out. He's just graduated from
high school, but his world is still shattered by the deaths of his two
closest friends in a car accident over the winter. As Elizabeth says,
"If only Jimmy and Nate hadn't gone to that party . . . if only there
hadn't been any beer . . . if only someone had taken their car keys."
Once she finally gets down to the beach, Elizabeth finds out she's
afraid of the ocean. The smell of the water and the salt air make her
stomach churn, her skin clammy. Once again, she's unable to join in the
Sheridan fun. She does meet someone interesting, however. A woman
testing the water for illegal dumping welcomes some help packing and
labeling samples, drawing Elizabeth into the excitement of the Water
Minders' hunt for an unknown polluter.
It's a year of changes and uncertainty for the Sheridan family. Even
Grandma, whose traditions and sense of right and wrong guide them all,
is shaken. It will take more than the summer to sort everything out.
