This Sporting Life

Contemporary American Poems about Sports and Games

Emilie Buchwald and Ruth Roston

A new edition of this wonderful collection of sports poems, vividly describing the joys —and pitfalls —of athletic pursuits.

This lively collection offers up the work of seventy-six of America's best poets and their contemplations on sports--from board games to bronc riding, baseball to boxing--and on the sport of life. The nine secitons of hte book cover such topics as Life is Water (swimming, boating, diving); Climbing the Air (rock climbing, parallel bars, pole vault, high jump, bronc riding, parachuting); On Incandescent Feet (running, jobbing, skating, skiing); Playing the Game (marbles, yo-ho, scrabble, Chinese checkers, solitaire, jump rope, darts, chess); and This Sporting Life (sport as metaphor for life). Entwined throughout the various themes is the universal idea that life is the ultimate sport in the testing of our bodies and in the celebration of the body's language.

Contributors: Raymond Carver (fishing), Louise Erdrich (hunting), Donald Hall (hunting), Richard Hugo (softball), Galway Kinnell (tennis), Maxine Kumin (swimming), Jana Harris (horse racing), James Wright (football), and Sharon Olds (baseball).
