Stories from Where We Live—The Gulf Coast

A Literary Field Guide

by Sara St. Antoine, editor

Presents stories, poems, and essays that together convey what makes the Gulf Coast region distinct, both in terms of human history and the plants and animals that thrive there. The book also features the storytelling talents of the Gulf Coast region, including fishing tales, Cajun animal stories, Choctaw legends, and songs from the cotton fields.

The pieces in the book are divided into four areas. "Adventures" presents the sweet delights of scalloping and the sure terrors of hurricanes and floods; "Great Places" takes readers across sandy beaches, lettuce lakes, cypress swamps, and bayous; "Reapers and Sowers" introduces the many people who rely on the natural resources of the region, from cotton farmers to hunters to berry pickers; "Wild Lives" focuses on such creatures as alligators, egrets, rattlesnakes, manatees, and mosquitos.

The back of the book includes a schematic chart of the region, descriptions of the region's habitats and plant and animal communities, and a list of natural areas. The Gulf Coast region stretches from the beaches and bottomland forests of east Texas to the bayous and floodplain forests of Louisiana and Mississippi to the swamps, islands, and seashores of Alabama and Florida, including the Florida Keys. Part of the region lies well inland, but all of it is characterized by a mild and humid climate, low-lying and often water-logged land.

Quotes:

“This is a book for children that adults can enjoy. . . . But more than that, it is a book about a region that many adults and many children love deeply —the Gulf Coast. Working from the concept of an “ecoregion' as opposed to the traditional beach and dunes perspective, the editor has brought together poems and stories that give the reader a real feeling for the coastal South. . . . Like any good children's book should, Stories From Where We Live: The Gulf Coast enlightens as it entertains.” —Harvey H. Jackson, The Anniston Star

“Like any good anthology, there is a real range of material. One of the best parts is the Appendix: Ecology of the Gulf Coast which answers questions like'What is an ecoregion?' and describes habitats and animals and plants. You, as the adult, should memorize this section so you sound really smart to the kids. . . . This book is identified as appropriate for readers nine and up and most adults will find that they happily fit in that category as well.” -The Islander

“A century ago, collections of intelligent anthologies for children graced bookshelves, encompassing titles like The World and Its People and The Outdoor Book. This fourth installment of the similarly minded literary series mapping the eco-regions of the US treats the Gulf Coast. All edited by St. Antoine, each seeks to give its readers a true impression of its proscribed region through memoirs, fiction, poetry, and finally exposition. It doesn't fail, even if some author's' connections with the Gulf Coast at times are a bit of a stretch, like equating a Po Boy with a Hero sandwich. No matter, for much of the collection is lively and evocative.”——Kirkus Reviews

"St. Antoine has brought together a fine array of essays, poetry, short stories, and excerpts from novels.”——Booklist

“Some of the South's best tales are combined here in a delightfully varied anthology containing the legends and lore of states from Texas to Florida.” —Mississippi Magazine
