Reflections of a Naturalist

by Ann Zwinger

Known for beautifully observed and illustrated books about the rivers, deserts, and mountains of the West, Ann Haymond Zwinger here focuses on the guiding principles of her life as naturalist. Even as she writes, she “looks” with a notebook and pencil, believing that “to know the world intimately is the beginning of caring.”

Zwinger moves from details to the larger patterns that link them to the entire world, finding in the filaments of mushrooms—or in links to other naturalists that have shaped her career—access to the essential connectedness of life. As artist, writer, naturalist, her responsibility is to herself create a link between scientific natural history and the lay reader who can learn to love the land.

Books in the Credo series explore the essential goals, concerns, and practices of contemporary American writers whose work emphasizes the natural world and human community.

Ann Zwinger

Author's Bio:

Ann Haymond Zwinger has published nearly a dozen books of natural history, including The Nearsighted Naturalist and Down Canyon. An adjunct professor at Colorado College, she lives in Colorado Springs.

Quotes:

"An uncharacteristically personal reflection by Ann Haymond Zwinger.... 'My discomfort with introspection may be why I prefer natural history writing, which dictates an outward focus, not an inward one,' she explains in the opening pages of a seven-day examination of the guiding principles behind her life as a naturalist” —Snowy Egret

“Zwinger knows with complete conviction that good writing is enough to inspire love and bring knowledge —and through these qualities, respect. As she so beautifully puts it, if you care about nature, “don't just send money, send love.'” —Audubon Naturalist News
