A childhood mystery—the stuff of nightmares—has haunted James Oakley all his life: the disappearance and death of his mother long ago in India. In a last attempt to unlock the secret of the past, James returns to the place of his birth, the Andaman Islands 700 miles off the coast of India, seeking traces of his mother in a place of treacherous seas and hurricanes.

“The closest thing to a faultless novel I have read for years. . . . With her sensuous, subtle writing Lee Langley shows how the effort to understand the past is never wasted.”—Daily Mail

“Multilayered and ambitious. . . . Evokes a shimmering vision of the past and its relation to the present.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“The solution, at the end of an exciting and provocative book with ravishing descriptions of rainforests and reefs, is as astonishing as any author could aim at.”—Ruth Rendell, Daily Telegraph

"Beautifully written. . . .  Langley has a very definite and original voice of her own, with the power to portray a real sense of deeper truths about humanity within the context of a gripping and moving story."—Sunday Times
