The Alliance for ReadingFor more than ten years, Milkweed Editions has worked with Twin Cities’ schools on activities that promote reading and the literary arts, particularly in schools where a majority of students receive subsidized breakfasts or lunches. Alliance activities are designed to make children’s literature a transformative force in young readers’ lives by awakening their imaginations, engaging them with the world presented in stories, demystifying the publishing process, and nurturing their potential as the writers of tomorrow. Activities include author visits to classrooms, in-school book groups, "Read the Book / See the Movie," writing contests sponsored by the Community Reporter, and "Read, Explore, Create," an intensive program in which students read a book and, working with artists from Young Audiences of Minnesota, reinterpret what they have learned, creating new works of art, from stage productions to wire sculpture, quilt pieces to photography to dance. The Alliance for Reading gratefully acknowledges support from the Ecolab Foundation, the "Twice the Gift" program of the Pohlad Family Foundation, RBC Dain Rauscher Foundation, Travelers Foundation, and the Claire Giannini Fund. Alliance partners include: Milkweed Editions, The Community Reporter, Young Audiences of Minnesota, Partners for Violence Prevention, and St. Paul Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Participating schools include: Adams Spanish Immersion, Ann Sullivan Middle School, Anwatin Middle School, Crosswinds Middle School, Eastern Heights School, Four Seasons A+ School, Homecroft Elementary, Marcy Open School, Monroe Community School, North End School, Olson Middle School, Prosperity Heights Elementary School, San Miguel Middle School, Sheridan Global Fine Arts School, St. Francis St. James United School, Therapeutic Learning Center, and Twin Cities Academy. “So, the big question? Was this residency and visit worth the time to me? Yes. Yes. Yes. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. Just tell me where and when and I’ll be there to sign anything you need me to sign and say whatever needs to be said because this experience was amazing.”—a teacher from Sanford Middle School "Many of my students are responsible for getting themselves ready for school and to the bus, so they are in control of attendance. The fact that they were all present shows their enjoyment and interest in the program."—a teacher at North End School "I sincerely hope we can continue having Mr. Armistead come. This was my first year with the books and I loved them. I really loved the visit by Mr. Armistead."—a teacher at Monroe Community School "This is a wonderful opportunity to have an author in the classroom. The students were extremely engaged. We appreciate you making it possible."—a teacher from San Miguel Middle School The links below are to books suitable for middle-grade classrooms.
